GM decides to test out wireless charging options, in particular in the Cadillac line. Wireless charging would allow for cable free charging on the go.

Wireless charging technology goes mobile

Over three years ago, GM announced plans to introduce wireless charging stations for your mobile phones. The device installed would be provided by Powermat, a wireless charging equipment designer. But the concept never came to be, until now. The 2015 Cadillac ATS coupe and sedan will come with the Powermat wireless charging technology.

The end result: You place your mobile phone into a small compartment, and it will charge while you drive. See the video showing the compartment here. The technology will conform with the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi, which is directly embedded into a bunch of Android and Windows phones on the market right now. No news on Apple yet, but I'm sure we'll hear from them soon enough if this takes off.

While this is only available on the Cadillac ATS, it is sure to trickle down to other GM cars, and might be the next big thing that changes the car market.
