Labor Day

Labor Day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 1894. When the labor movement had started in earnest in the 1870s, Frederick Douglass had written about its "folly, tyranny, and wickedness," since many unions accepted white members only. Not to be deterred, many black tradesmen and workingmen organized their own unions, such as this group of Jacksonville bricklayers pictured around 1899.
